Disappointment
Who are you?
I am the one who looks forward to something with great anticipation only to have my hopes dashed.
I am the one who is childlike in my disappointment.
I am the one who feels my disappointment as sharply as the hundreds of tiny stones prick at the soles of my bare feet.
I am the one who beholds the residue of dreams that did not come to fruition with tears and disappointment.
What do you have to give to me?
I give to you the knowledge that life’s disappointments are fleeting.
I give to you the knowledge that there will be other ice cream cones.
I give to you the ability to realize that in the grand scheme of things your disappointments are small as so many pebbles on the ground.
I give to you the knowledge that while real in the moment, your disappointments will have no lasting effect just as the pebbles do not leave a lasting impression on your feet or the ice cream on the ground. In a few days it will fade away.
Is there anything else you want to say to me today?
What I want to say to you today is: Acknowledge your disappointments, grieve them, and then move on. Don’t spend your life counting your disappointments and holding on to them.
